CTSI/CIEH Conference - facing the future

CIEH is delighted to be partnering with The Chartered Trading Standards Institute (CTSI) on 19 (14.00) and 20 June (17.00) – the second half of their historical Annual Conference. The conference is taking place in Leeds at the Royal Armouries Museum.

This exclusive face-to-face CIEH member event is available, free of charge*, to any member who would like to attend and relax, learn and network with colleagues in regulatory services. There will be a varied programme of keynote and workshop sessions, covering the main environmental health pillars that our environmental health professionals deal with.

Alongside a full programme of speakers, over 40 exhibitors will be present to demonstrate innovative solutions and products.

There will be an awards gala evening, hosted by CTSI, that CIEH members are invited to attend**. CIEH will be presenting an award – more details on this will be announced soon.

CPD: 9 hours and 30 minutes

This event is free to attend for CIEH members. However, places are limited and therefore to minimise the risk of wasted places we are implementing a 'no-show fee' of £99 if you do not attend the conference. See the event terms and conditions for full details.

Several options are available to you, e.g. you can attend the whole conference (including the CTSI only days if you wish to pay to attend those) or you could attend the CIEH days. Below is a breakdown of your options and any costs that may be applicable.

Day 1 (18 June): This is a CTSI conference which is predominantly for CTSI members only. CIEH members can attend but must pay the non-member rate of £195+VAT. To book please visit the CTSI Conference website.

Day 2 (19 June) Morning only: This is a CTSI conference which is predominantly for CTSI members only. CIEH members can attend but must pay the special rate of £75+VAT. To book please visit the CTSI Conference website.

Day 2 (19 June) From 14.00 onwards: This is the joint CTSI & CIEH Conference which is free to CIEH members* (a no-show fee of £99 is applicable - please see the event terms and conditions).

Awards & Gala Dinner Evening (19 June): This will be held at the Armouries Venue and is available to CTSI & CIEH delegates*. Delegates will need to pay £65+VAT to attend.

Day 3 (20 June): This is the joint CTSI & CIEH Conference day. Available for all CTSI & CIEH members* (a no-show fee of £99 is applicable - please see the event terms and conditions).

*Bookings are made on a first come, first served basis – there are 250 delegate places available on 19 June and 500 delegate places available on 20 June.

Dr Henry Dawson CEnvH MCIEH, Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for Environmental Health, Cardiff Metropolitan University. Henry’s research interests focus on regulatory interventions for housing and health. His recent work includes national analysis of property licensing schemes and authoring of the recent updates to the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS) Operating Guidance. Henry sits on the Wales Housing Expert Panel, the Rent Smart Wales Advisory Panel, and the Welsh Housing Survey Advisory Panel. He is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Chartered Member of CIEH, and a member of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH). 

Jill Stewart, Associate Professor in Public Health, University of Greenwich. Jill spent a decade working in housing in local government before taking her first academic post in 1999. Her research largely focuses on housing and health, including the environmental health housing workforce, featuring across a range of publications, media and conferences. Jill is a fellow of CIEH, a Chartered EHP, member of the Chartered Institute of Housing (CIH), senior fellow of the Higher Education Academy, and associate of the Faculty of Public Health (FPH). She is co-chair of the London Public Health Housing Network and a member of the CIEH Housing Advisory Panel. 

Jon Buttolph, Executive Director of Professional Standards, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). Jon joined CIEH in April 2000 and became part of the Executive Management Team in 2020. His responsibilities include membership recruitment and retention, CIEH's learning offer and professional standards and ethics. He previously worked as Membership Services Officer at the British Humanist Association and started his career at the Directory of Social Change. Jon is currently heading up various projects under the ‘Sustainable Profession’ banner, including the Workforce Satellite Panel and other initiatives.   

Louise Hosking CEnvH MCIEH CMIOSH CMaPS PIEMA SIIRSM, Executive Director of Environmental Health (CIEH). Louise is a Chartered Environmental Health Professional with extensive experience across public, private and third sectors. In 2021, she was elected by peers to serve as the 55th IOSH President. Louise joined CIEH in May 2023 with a background in transformational leadership, social sustainability, governance and building psychologically safe and inclusive teams. Louise facilitates opportunities for outward engagement via CIEH’s presidential, policy and events teams. She is harnessing the power of members and stakeholders to promote the role of environmental health professionals and the prevention-first business case which comes from supporting the five pillars of environmental health locally, nationally and globally.

Louise Mansfield, Legal Director, Bevan Brittan. Louise specialises in health and safety and criminal regulatory law and advises on a range of regulatory legal issues including health and safety, building safety, fire safety, product liability, food safety, white collar crime, contentious environmental and transport law. She represents clients at public inquiries, inquests, PACE interviews and in relation to prosecutions.

Mark Elliott CEnvH FCIEH, President, Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (CIEH). Mark previously served as both a Trustee and Chair at CIEH. He has been a member since 1978 and is now retired, with his most recent employment having been as Head of Public Protection at Pembrokeshire County Council. Prior to this, he was an Environmental Health Practitioner at a number of Welsh local authorities. He also served as chair of Environmental Health Wales and as a member of OFCOM’s Advisory Committee for Wales.

Peter Wright MCIEH HonMemFPH. After qualifying as an EHO in 1984, Peter held a number of roles in North East England before taking on his first position as an Environmental Health Manager in 1997. In 2002 he moved to Gateshead Council and managed a number of services before retiring in 2024. He established the Association of Chief Environmental Health Officers in England, as a result of the profession’s work during the COVID emergency and served as its first chair from 2021-23. He remains an active member of the Association and has retained responsibility as its lead on Private Sector for 2024. Upon retirement Peter established his own company offering Systems Thinking and Transformational Leadership support and training, and he is currently engaged as a Project Officer for Operation Jigsaw,  a National Trading Standards Estate and Letting Agency Team project.

William Roberts, Chief Executive, Royal Society for Public Health (RSPH). William joined RSPH as Chief Executive in June 2022. He brings a wealth of experience across public health and inequalities from the NHS, third sector, social care, housing, local government and further education. Previously William was a senior leader in the NHS across roles in public health, strategy, transformation and planning, and he is also a registered nurse. William is deputy chair of the Terrence Higgins Trust and a Non-Executive Director of Housing 21 and POBL.
